Harvest by species. Fish and Game reports one deer harvest per unit plus the share that were whitetails, so mule deer harvest is total deer times the mule deer share and whitetail harvest is the rest. Statewide these come to about 18,640 mule deer and 18,250 whitetails, matching the 2026 outlook's general-season totals. Elk harvest adds the any-weapon, archery and muzzleloader general hunts, about 13,530 statewide (outlook: 13,524).
Per 100 sq mi divides harvest by unit area. It's the closest thing to density Fish and Game publishes by unit, but it also tracks access and hunter effort, so read it next to hunters per 100 sq mi.
Archery. Switch "Hunt with" to Archery and the harvest, success and pressure views use only archery-only general hunts (2025: about 1,305 mule deer, 753 whitetails and 4,026 elk). Archery-only days count only bow seasons; bows are also legal in any-weapon seasons. Archery success uses a 30-hunter minimum.
Hunter success for mule deer and whitetail is for all deer in the unit. For elk it's general-season elk harvest divided by elk hunters across all weapon types.
Management areas. Mule deer use 16 Data Analysis Units, whitetails use 7, and elk use 28 zones. Outlooks come from Fish and Game's 2026 regional write-ups.
Hunt lookup. Controlled hunts, general-season elk dates and drawing odds come from a once-a-year snapshot of Fish and Game's Hunt Planner (data/hunts.json, made by scripts/fetch_hunts.py). They're cross-checked against the 2026 Big Game Seasons & Rules booklet, which also fills in hunts Hunt Planner leaves out. The booklet wins when the two disagree.
Seasons on the map are 2026 general (over-the-counter) seasons only; controlled hunts are in the lookup above. Deer dates come from the Big Game Seasons & Rules tables. Elk dates come from the Hunt Planner's general-season list, which leaves out some windows, so each unit links to its elk zone's page in the booklet. Always confirm in the rules before you go.
Boundaries are simplified from Fish and Game's GIS layers to about 3 miles, fine for picking areas but not for legal boundary decisions.
